Jon asked me to marry him the summer before our senior year. We lived together that summer, splitting our time between Hartford (where he had an actuarial internship) and Mount Holyoke up in the Pioneer Valley (where I took part in an REU program). Laying in bed in his apartment one night, he whispered the question in my ear. Over the course of that summer, we tried to find a ring. Being, well, college students, we got the simplest possible setting for the loveliest stone we could afford. I didn’t notice for a couple of years that it was crookedly set.
